AdBlue In Your Diesel

So, what is the problem with putting AdBlue in a diesel tank? Because the product is mainly ionised water, it's as bad as putting water in your tank. Diesel and water do not mix in the least and attempting to run a diesel car on water will never work. Apart from this, the urea is quite corrosive to the fuel system pipes and seals and is prone to crystalising, obstructing injectors and filters.

If you find you poured AdBlue in the fuel tank get it drained as quickly as possible. And obviously don't start up the vehicle - not even to move it to a parking place. Assuming you did start the vehicle you would very likely have to have the entire fuel system purged and fuel filters replaced.

Fuel contaminated with water

Fuel contaminated with water, whether it is unleaded petrol or diesel, is definitely a serious situation to deal with in a vehicle - especially in modern-day common-rail engines. Putting water in your fuel is going to trigger idling difficulties, lumpy running, abnormal smoke and, if it's not dealt with effectively, possibly broken injectors. Water in petrol is quicker to remove as compared to water in diesel - this is largely because diesel is an oil. However we are able to resolve both cases pretty expediently.

Remember however that whenever the vehicle has been run on the water contaminated fuel it will likely need a new fuel filter to be fitted since the previous one will likely be wholly water-logged and ineffective.
